Every weekend, in the greater Houston area, over 4.6 million people stay away from church for one reason or another. God planted New World Church as a new, innovative, and courageous mission to reach a segment of these people with the good news about Jesus Christ and the Kingdom of God.
History of NewWorld Church
In January of 2007, Robert Johnson, was appointed by the Texas Conference of the United Methodist Church, to serve full-time as the founding pastor of a new church, under the “mothering” of Windsor Village UMC.
Pastor Johnson and his wife, Linda, started praying and planning together. The Lord gave them the name, “NewWorld Church” in the Spring of 2007 as a metaphor for the Kingdom of God, which we will model and invite others to experience and enter!
In July, 2007 we started a Thursday night bible study to gather the initial persons who would help us plant this new church. We grew immediately, and during that summer, we sometimes had as many as 80+ people (adults and children) in attendance!
On the 2nd Sunday of September, 2007, we launched public worship. Our attendance that day was 333! Of course, we had lot of visitors who came to support the launch of New World Church. 16 people joined the church that week. 8 joined the next Sunday. We have consistently had people visiting and joining NWC. We have also had people who came and served for a brief period and moved on. We have met and exceeded every goal established by the Texas Conference for this church!
On April 18, 2010, New World Church chartered with 248 full members, not including children less than 12 years of age. Since that time, we have continued to grow numerically, evolve structurally, and mature spiritually.
New World Church has had 4 associate pastors, including current associates, Clarence White and Kefentse Risher. New World Church has become a “training ground” for United Methodist ministry candidates who desire to explore and practice their gifts for ministry.
The most significant ministry that we offer to the community has been our Sunday Worship, which is held on Sunday mornings, 10am, currently at The Villa Ballroom, 3330 S. Dairy Ashford, Houston, TX. In our mission field, the Sunday Morning Event is the door through which most people will visit our church. Nearly every person who has joined our church joined through this ministry. Our Sunday Worship service is noted for its energetic, loving, joyful, and often unique approach to worship. The music is always great, and our preachers focus on delivering messages that are practical, relevant, and life-transforming. Most of all we aim to provide the context in which people can consistently and continuously experience God!
In the summer of 2010, we launched a new ministry structure that includes 6 Core Ministries beyond Sunday Morning Worship: Men’s Ministry, Women’s Ministry, The GR8 (Young Adult Ministry), Youth Ministry, Children’s Ministry, and Prayer Ministry. All of these ministries are growing and gradually expanding their presence in and impact upon the life of NWC.
We are also working to strengthen the entire church family in the 8 Spiritual Disciplines that we believe will grow us, individually, and mature us collectively: Attend, Invite, Give, Serve, Pray, Connect, Study, and Live (these 8 disciplines are explained in more detail in your new membership class).
Our current Spiritual Theme is: EXTRAVAGANT GENEROSITY! We are praying that the families and members of NWC will be encouraged to be EXTRAVAGANT in their love and service to God, God’s people, and The God’s Kingdom!
Thanks be to God! The best is yet to come! |
